Castor Oil for Hair Growth: How to Use It on Hair, Brows & Lashes

Castor oil has been used for generations as a natural way to support thicker-looking hair, fuller brows and healthier lashes. Cold-pressed and hexane-free, it's rich in ricinoleic acid and fatty acids that condition the hair and soothe the scalp. Here's why people use it, what the science shows, and how to use it properly.

Why do people use castor oil for hair?

  • Conditions & strengthens: its thick texture coats the hair shaft, smooths the cuticle and reduces friction — so hair looks shinier and breaks less.
  • Soothes the scalp: a nourishing massage oil that may help with dryness and flaking and supports a healthier scalp environment.
  • Brows & lashes: a tiny amount nightly helps them look fuller and well-groomed over time.
  • Multi-use & affordable: one bottle works for hair, skin, lashes and castor oil packs.

What the research says

Castor oil is about 90% ricinoleic acid, an unusual omega-9 fatty acid that gives it its properties (general information, not medical advice):

  • Ricinoleic acid has been studied for anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects when applied topically.
  • Its conditioning action is physical — it coats and smooths the hair shaft, which improves shine and manageability and helps reduce breakage. Note: there isn't strong clinical proof that castor oil makes hair grow faster; most benefits are around conditioning, scalp comfort and reduced breakage.
  • Dermatology reviews describe its long, safe history of topical use for skin and hair.

How to use castor oil on hair (step by step)

  1. Warm a small amount between your palms (castor oil is thick — a little goes far).
  2. Massage into the scalp for 3–5 minutes to boost circulation.
  3. Work the rest through mid-lengths and ends.
  4. Leave 30 minutes to overnight, then shampoo out. Use 1–2x per week.

For brows and lashes, dip a clean mascara wand into the oil and apply a thin coat before bed. Our 50ml castor oil is perfect for this.

What about castor oil packs?

A castor oil pack is a cloth soaked in castor oil and placed on the body (often the abdomen) with gentle warmth, used as part of a relaxing self-care routine. Our reusable castor oil pack wraps (set of 6) make this mess-free.
