What the research says
Carvacrol, the main active in oregano oil, has been studied in laboratory research for its antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. Most of this work is early-stage (test-tube and lab studies), so oil of oregano is best understood as a traditional wellness botanical rather than a medicine. How to use
Internal (adults only): this oil is very strong — start with 1 drop in a teaspoon (5ml) of black seed or olive oil and build up over time. Typical use is 1–4 drops in 1 tsp of carrier oil, once or twice a day, followed by a glass of water. A warm sensation is normal.
Topical: always dilute — about 1 drop of oregano oil per teaspoon (5ml) of carrier oil (olive or coconut), then apply to the area. Patch-test first.
Aromatherapy: add a few drops to a diffuser, or to a bowl of hot water for steam inhalation. Blends well with lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus and bergamot.
Cautions: Oil of oregano is extremely strong and must always be diluted before use — never take or apply it neat. Adults only; not for internal use in children under 15. Not recommended during pregnancy or nursing. Do a skin patch test before topical use. Avoid contact with eyes. Keep away from pets and out of reach of children. Do not exceed the recommended amount.
