St John's Wort Oil: Traditional Uses & How People Use It
Share
St John's Wort oil is a deep-red herbal oil made by infusing the flowers of Hypericum perforatum in a carrier oil. As a topical oil it has a long traditional history in skin care.
Why people use the oil (topically)
- Skin soothing: traditionally applied to support the look of minor everyday skin irritations, dry patches and the skin's natural recovery.
- Massage oil: a rich, conditioning oil for the skin.
What to know
This is an external-use herbal oil. Note that St John's Wort taken internally as a supplement is known to interact with many prescription medicines (including the contraceptive pill and antidepressants) — so never take it by mouth without medical advice. Our oil is for topical use. (General information, not medical advice.)
How to use
Apply a small amount to clean skin as needed. Patch-test first, and avoid strong sun exposure on treated areas (it can increase sun sensitivity).
